Description
Agathla Peak, an eroded volcanic plug, towers over 1500 feet (457 meters) above the surrounding landscape. Located in northern Arizona just south of the Utah border on Navajo Indian tribal land, it is considered sacred to the Navajo tribe.. The Navajo name is aghaałą́, meaning "much wool", due to the large amount of wind blown deer and antelope fur the formation collects.
Volcanic plugs are formed when lava fills and cools in a vertical lava tube in the ground. Over a period of millions of years, as in the case of Agathla Peak, the softer surrounding sediment is eroded away, leaving the harder lava plug exposed.
